Myth: “Bullying is a school problem, the school should handle it”
Fact: Bullying is not exclusive to schools, but happens in family households, in work places, and in public places as well.

Myth
: "Just stand up for yourself and hit them back"
Fact: While there are some times when people can be forced to defend themselves, hitting back usually makes the bullying worse and increases the risk for serious physical harm. (bullying.org)

Myth: “There are three types of people: bullies, "losers" who get picked on by bullies, and bystanders”
Fact: "Most people have been a target of bullying at some point in their lives. They may have also been the person who was doing the bullying or, most certainly, seen someone being bullied". (b-free.ca)

 

The key message here is that the same individuals can both exhibit bullying behaviour and be victimized by bullying behaviour in different settings or different stages of life. Getting help for people who are targeted by bullying might also prevent that person from exhibiting bullying behaviour in the future.
